Urethane Oil Based Paint Vs. Water Based Finishes

General Finishes water based products can be sprayed through compressed air, HVLP, airless or C.A.S. units. Annelise – You are best off starting from scratch and getting 3 coats of oil based poly. At the doorway, soak up excess finish with the cut-in pad and squeeze it out into a paint pan or other container. Gouges and holes in wood are more difficult to repair than dents because wood fibres have been cut, torn and removed from the wood. We do not recommend waxing as it can make the floors slippers like a bowling alley.

The rotating top platens allow the operator to have easy access to all sides of the wood item throughout the various wood finishing processes such as sanding, painting and sealing. Choosing the right finish option is a task that requires a little homework, but is always rewarding. They gum up sandpaper when the wood is sanded, so a sanding sealer will be needed.

We recommend using them on any woods that penetrate easily, such as pine or aspen, to produce a more even looking finish. Old oil based finish, or wax left by improper sanding creates a barrier between the Bona and the wood and does not allow it to properly bond. Using too much water on a varnish, wax or oil will take a little of your finish off each time it is used which in turn means your floor will have a shorter life.

This marine-quality finish remains flexible and will expand and contract to outperform traditional polyurethane in harsh conditions. It is important not to sand through the epoxy to bare wood because this will show through the final finish. To get a few more years out of your wood floors you could try either one of these products: Holloway House, Rejuvenate, or Bona Pro series. Crystal clear or amber tone: Many clear finishes add a rich, warm, amber tone to the wood.

Most hardwood floor installers and industry experts feel that Swedish finish is the most durable and long-lasting option for finishing hardwood floors. Whether you are installing a new hardwood floor, refinishing an old one, or just keeping your existing floor looking as good as new, Minwax® has a full range of products to make and keep your floors beautiful. For next year’s tree, try using a tray under the tree stand and be careful not to overfill or spill water onto the floor.

If you’re the inquisitive, inventive type, never mix water based finishes with oil based finishes together in the can. Spraying water based finish in humidities of over 75% may cause blushing because moisture becomes trapped beneath the finish and cannot evaporate. Water-based finish is usually made with either an acrylic resin (sold as water-based lacquer) or an acrylic urethane mixture (sold as water-based polyurethane).

Acryl Acrylic modified lacquers are usually based upon a mix of a non-yellowing cellulose resin called cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB for short) and acrylic. Any wood floor finish can be problematic when applied contrary to manufacturer directions, so that sometimes can be factored into disappointment with a product. Assuming there is no reaction and no adhesion issues (and there may be issues), then it depends on what grade of water poly he used. The main advantage of oil is that they are the easiest of all wood finishes to repair.

Avoid contaminating the wood surface with silicone – found in some lubricants and furniture polishes – which can produce small dimples in the surface, called fish eye. But if you aren’t worried about stains and water marks, and you don’t mind the little extra work involved in preparing shellac, then it’s hard to beat the beautiful, lasting glow from a few coats of shellac.

The most relevant product to finishing is Zinsser’s SealCoat , which is simply a #2 cut of shellac, (and despite its name, can be used as more than a sanding sealer; it can also be used as a standalone wood finish). While I do not recommend attempting to Sand and Refinish your hardwood floors yourself (as I have seen countless disasters), I do feel comfortable in recommending polyurethane so that you (or hopefully) your installer uses top quality products. Use shellac as a base coat, and finish with two or three coats of hand-rubbed wax.

NCL’s breakthrough wood finish technology improves performance while simplifying product application and maintenance. Then it occurred to me that that potentially may have been a bad start to a project that would be topcoated with a waterbased finish. Even though it is so highly regarded, there are many water based finishes available for a fairly low price.

If the finish is too cold, it flows much less freely and also releases air poorly, which can result in brush stroke marks and air bubbles remaining after drying. French polishing is not polishing as such, but a method of applying many thin coats of shellac using a rubbing pad, yielding a very fine glossy finish. Stained floors: Make sure the surface is thoroughly dry before applying SamaN Pure Performance finish.

After that has dried for an hour, I spray many, many coats of the tinted alcohol, gradually building the color and creating a very even, subtle fade from the center to the edges without building any finish. Even typical waterbased poly has a couple of drawbacks: it smells like ammonia and it can make the wood look washed out when it cures. The abrasive material should cut off the wood fibres without pressing them down into the wood. We had our maple floors refinished 2.5 years ago using Bona Stain (dark black cherry), finished with 3 coats of Bona Traffic.

You might even recall an eZine interview a while ago in which I interviewed the folks at Rust-Oleum about this product and the company’s other new Wood Care finishes, or a blog post from one of their recent visits to the office So, time to give it a try for myself. Many brands of spar varnish also contain UV inhibitors to protect the wood from sunlight.

There are also waterborne finishes and sealers that look like oil base and No Oil Gloss under a satin or semi will not make you floors last longer that is a myth. When a hardwood floor is re-coated, the floor is buffed and a new layer of finish is simply applied over the existing, worn layer. Treat floors with these finishes and floors with no finish as you would penetrating-seal-treated and oil-treated floors. Finitec wood floor finishes are easy to apply with an impressive drying time of 2 to 3 hours.

I think she used Windex since that is the only other cleaner that they use and the bottle was empty while the Bona was not touched They tried light mopping with warm water then using Bona but it didn’t make any difference. Note that the application of a supplementary finish on site cannot be performed under the same favourable conditions as per factory finishing; there is a greater risk of the presence of dust burs and similar objects. Quick drying, quick cleanup: Water-based finish sprays or brushes on easily, but it dries quickly enough that you have to work fast to avoid brush marks.

Wax is the time-tested, old-fashioned way to refinish wood floors and was routinely used before polyurethanes became available in the 1970s. Larger gouges and splits are best repaired by patching the void with a piece of wood that matches the colour and grain orientation of the wood under repair. The type of stain will either accentuate or obscure the wood grain and neither is superior to the other. When possible, use a water-based sealer or natural oil for your wood finishing project (see The Green Guide buying guide link below). It is important not to sand through the epoxy film to bare wood as this will show up under the finish as color changes.

Successful filling of voids in wood requires the filler to precisely match the colour and grain pattern of the wood around the void, which is difficult to achieve in practice. I just finished a detailed article on how to use the Oil Modified Polyurethane for the directory subscribers, and believe me it is not a quick and easy process, but worth it. You can buy an email copy of this with a small donation to the site, just ask.

As with the solvent based lacquer system, there are many good products available for pore filling, color shading, sanding, and buffing that are compatible with this water based urethane. High use flat surfaces such as dining tables and desks will develop the patina of every day life over time so we recommend top coating with High Performance (or Exterior 450) to our customers who are patina-adverse or wish extra stain protection. I started as a big fan of oil based products like conversion varnish and lacquers. If it has oils or waxes in it, I would definitely stay away from that as it can degrade the poly finish.

Therefore treating you newly coated floor finish with a little love and care in the early stages will minimize premature scratching and scuff marks. Either way, pine is softer than hardwood, so I think that the oil based poly is the better way to go. I will ask my head foreman what he thinks on modified water/oil based. If, after the alcohol has dried, the woodstain is a little lighter in color, then you know that the stain is water based. I filter the finish directly into the spray gun’s cup, immediately before spraying. Decoration means the finish showcases the wood’s natural beauty, color, figure patterns, grain, and depth.
