The great thing about creating shelving is you don’t have to spend a lot of money. I used a combination of 2x4s (for the vertical support posts), and 2x3s (for the main horizontal framework, including the boards tacked to the wall). Attach 1×2 wood cleats to the wall studs with screws to support the back of the shelves. The best way to do this is to attach it directly to the wall studs within the wall. Rip the strips to identical width so that all the finished shelves will be of uniform thickness when the strips are assembled on edge.
First, Brent measured the 1×6 inch board and using the miter saw cut the piece for the back of the shelves 36 inches long. For simple back-and-side supported shelves, miter the fronts of the side supports to make them less obvious. I also used ½ inch thick plywood for the shelving surface, with the smoother side of the plywood facing up. Lowes will rip cut the 8×4 ft sheets of plywood for you to save you some time. If you have some staples sticking up, use a hammer to drill the staples flush into the wood.
Slippery surfaces are not a cat’s friend when jumping from shelf to shelf, especially if they build up a head of steam. Make sure you feel ridges on both sides of the blanks as you tighten each clamp, and again after all the clamps are tight. Caution: If your shelf and miter gauge are unstable in the starting position because they hang off the front of the saw, use a sled to make this cut. It’s a little difficult to see in these pictures, but I have also tacked in some support boards between the horizontal beams, coming out perpendicular to the main wall.
