Structural aircraft-grade plywood is more commonly manufactured from African mahogany or American birch veneers that are bonded together in a hot press over hardwood cores of basswood or poplar or from European Birch veneers throughout. Downcutting bits are preferred for cutting flexible thin material like 1/16″ aluminum sheet since they keep your goods flat to the table where up cutting bits may tend to pull the material up off the table. It means you can push your bit through the wood with the confidence of knowing that the folks who made your router bit cared as much about their product, as you care about yours.
Plywood is used in many applications that need high-quality, high-strength sheet material. The smallest router bit in the set of three worked as I had hoped to create slots to receive the four frame pieces. A good up-cut bit will leave a pretty clean cut too, but technically-speaking, the down-spiral would be a cleaner cut. I also ripped some wood to attach under the edge of the plywood to both stiffen it up and give the oak more area to be nailed too. In larger sizes, this design cuts faster but with a slightly rougher quality than with other style bits. Only my router handling skills is the limit, these bit does that other dadoes tools do for much money.
I’m hoping these sizes will fit my plywood sizes purchased from Lowes/Home Depot better than the standard size router bits I already have. You can be excused for feeling a little flustered when it comes to selecting from the router bit smorgasbord. But the 1×2 will certainly give you more strength, no matter what size roundover you choose. Pattern bits have a bearing above the cutting bit; the cutting bit follows whatever the bearing is riding against.

You can purchase some fluted bits with shear angles – the downward shear helps eliminate chipping and splintering on the top of stock, and generally gives a smoother finish, particularly on wood with an irregular grain pattern. Exterior glued plywood is suitable for outdoor use, but because moisture affects the strength of wood, optimal performance is achieved in end uses where the wood’s moisture content remains relatively low. Generally speaking, plywood cuts best at a rate of 80 inches per minute (ipm) and a depth per pass of about 0.4 inches.
These bits provide a different accent edge to drawer fronts, door and table edges, desks, windowsills, chair and handrails, molding, and plaques, etc. Available in a range of diameters, lengths of cut, materials, and flute designs, straight router bits can do it all. I ordered a Freud downcut spiral bit (76-109) for my dewalt plunge router but it was 4″ overall length instead of 3 1/2 as spec’d. I was understanding that the special bits are due to the nominal size of the American plywood, not being a true full step measurement. For shallow cuts (less than, say, 1/4″) a compression bit and an up-cut bit look the same as just the tip of the compression bit is in the up-cut geometry. I typically don’t use spirals when hand feeding because I find the bits burn up easier with the stop and go and inconsistent hand feed speed. Make a quick sketch on a 12”x12” piece of scrap plywood and use a ¼-inch bit to cut it out. Several test cuts were needed to get the correct thickness and cutting height, like a rail-and-stile router-bit set.
I’m not trying to nitpick, but I think you’d get much better results with a downspiral or a compression spiral bit. Plunge Point Panel router bits are good for laying out and cutting openings in paneling, drywall, or siding. Spiral upcut bits tend to tear out a bit more on the top surface, since they are lifting the wood, but usually leave the bottom surface in excellent shape. Many bits can be used for multiple applications so you don’t need to buy 30 bits right away if you are in the prototyping stage of your project.
All Whiteside router bits are made in the USA, but their’ commitment to domestic production goes beyond just bits. Use Template bits to make copies of a shape, rout out material for inlay, or to clean out the bottom of a Dado made on a table or chop saw. Whiteside uses American made grinding wheels in their machine shop, and packages their bits in American made plastic sleeves and cases. Router bits would only work in Wood, Plastic, Non- ferros metal such as Aluminum & Brass!
THe so-called compression bits with dual spirals going to the middle allow through cuts as opposed to grooving. If the bit gets TOO low, though, the square edges of the bit will start to create a notch in the wood, which you probably don’t want if you want the top to be smooth, as in the picture. Whiteside also make compatible bits for many different jig systems like Leigh Jig, Keller, OmniJig, Porta-Cable and what’s more Whiteside are Akeda approved and also the recommended router bits for Incra. A mortising bit with a bearing on it can be used to rout hinge mortises on a door using a hand held router with a template, and it can also be used for other template work as well.
Straight-flute bits with one cutting edge are the only bits that come in very small sizes for routing inlays or other small jobs (there isn’t much room on a 1/16 bit for two flutes). I started a sign shop and I bought these bits on sale, all the while thinking I would have to replace them after a short while. I never used a router before (did few test passes with this one, but never did an actual router job). Hopefully I can find some super small bits for my inlays as they are typically fairly small. This makes it very quick to cut in perfect fitting dados on the router table quickly without messing with you table saw.
I then use a 2″ long 1/2″ diameter twin flute straight worktop router bit as finishing pass at 5.8m/min. Or I can screw it to a pair of sawhorses, attach a primitive fence, and use it as a portable job-site router table. Spiral bits have cutting edges that wrap around the bit in a helix, for a smooth surface finish on the workpiece, and excellent chip clearing in enclosed feature.
A CNC router however will typically provide a better cut when using a climb cut especially in solid wood because it will eliminate the possibility of tear out along the cutting vector. The video above demonstrates how to setup your router, and use a simple jig and clamp to make dado cuts. To use them, cut your plywood panel to finished size, and then rout the recess. Then belt sand the top so that it’s perfectly flush with the top of the plywood. I currently have and upcut 1/4 inch bit, and a downcut 1/4 bit that i bought from centurion tools. I wanted to get something that would be an option should I not want to load in a dado stack.
The Burgess Edge system is the only edgebanding system that employs the use of bearings to index the edge of both the plywood the natural wood insert. Like everyone else, I’d like to maximize cutting speed, maximize cut quality and minimize cost of bits. As far as the plywood issue, well I now know that when I buy plywood, I need to double check the thickness every time.
You can even send in your worn out bits for a retipping and for half the money receive a better cutting tool than some of the imports are when new. Flush-trimming bits are available with the bearing ‘over’ (between the cutting edge and the shank of the bit) or ‘under’ (at the end of the bit shown in the photo right). And then since the face with be a 1×2, you could use a 3/4 roundover bit if you wanted.
