A wooden spoon is a spoon made from wood, usually given to an individual or team which has come last in a competition, but sometimes also to runners-up. Wooden spoons don’t quickly heat to scalding temperatures, chemically react with acidic foods, or scratch pots and bowls, as their metal counterparts do. They don’t melt or leach chemicals or strange tastes into hot foods as plastic does. Today, wooden spoons in western cultures are generally medium to large spoons used for mixing ingredients for cooking or baking.
Besides that, when I take the old spoon down from the wall—to oil or just admire it—I can see the faint blemishes left by my ancestor’s tools, and I can sense the feel that that oldtime carver put into his or her work. Another reason that wooden spoons are superior to metal spoons is that wooden spoons aren’t conductive. Use the gouge to cut the wood away, but leave plenty of material all the way around.. a spoon with a hole in its bowl will have to be alibied into a stirring stick or a fork!
The method most often used for the woodenspoon is ‘The Starteling Effect.’ The way it works is, the army with the longest wooden spoon starts making chants. To this day, wooden spoon awards” are still sometimes given (though not always with actual spoons) to the team with the worst record in sports like crew and rugby. Took me back to my high school woodshop days- I made dozens of spoon and fork sets, with the occasional salad bowel.
The Wooden Spoon Prank is a practical joke disguised as a turn-based endurance game in which two participants duel by striking each other’s head with a wooden spoon in their mouths, though in reality, the targeted victim is smacked in the head at full force by a third person secretly holding a wooden spoon. Once again the spoon may or may not have a big effect depending on how fast it heats up. Allegedly metal spoons don’t work because they heat up too fast, though I must admit I’ve never tested this myself. But of course the spoon is above a pan of boiling water so it will eventually heat up and stop bursting the bubbles.

In late 18th-century Britain, wooden spoons were handed out as booby prizes to students with the worst academic performances; later, they were instead bestowed upon the most popular person in a class. But if you’re just testing to see if your chicken will sizzle, the wooden spoon works really well.
On the 25th March 2001, they faced off in the middle of the town square surrounded by their families. The best way to wash a wooden spoon is to clean it immediately after use, using warm, soapy water Don’t use abrasive cleaning sponges on it, just the soft sponges. This part spatula, part spoon cradles your scrambled eggs and other foods with ease while protecting the Teflon on your pans. The large oval and slight depth to the bowl of this spoon makes it a fine utensil for serving casserole and other foods that cling together. As I said earlier, the spoon is one of my favorites and it is a blessing and a privilege to be a caretaker for such a beautiful and lovingly made thing.
On February 15th, 2010, a metal spoon version of the prank was posted to Ebaum’s World. If you keep using the same wooden spoon over a pot of boiling water, it will warp from the moisture and heat. How the Cambridge wooden spoon idea came to be used in rugby union is not exactly known, but in the early years of what is now the Six Nations Championship there were many Cambridge graduates playing, so they may have attempted to preserve the concept after the last one was awarded in 1909. There’s a reason wooden spoons have been considered the cooking utensil par excellence for so many years.
Flat-edged wooden spoon: This type of wooden spoon is excellent where you need to scrape, such as when making gravy, a sauce, or for dislodging roasted vegetables. Wooden spoons dipped in melted chocolate and covered in your favourite candy, which also serves as decorations, make for a great homemade gift or a fun treat for kids’ parties. The West Coast Eagles ‘won’ their first Wooden Spoon in 2010, and the Gold Coast Suns and GWS Giants won it in their first season in 2011 and 2012 respectively.
Although we were still full from lunch, we jumped at the chance to eat at Wooden Spoon and to see the parentals as well. The handle of the spoon lends itself to both the spokeshave and the straight knife. Next up a cooking spoon by Fritiof Runhall, possibly the best spooncarver in the world. Lightly brush your spoons with mineral oil (oils used for cooking can spoil on the spoon over time) when they start to dull. A wooden spoon can be used as a plant stake or garden marker; you can write on the spoon or the handle, so you know which peppers are the really hot ones.
While all of these facts already tip the scale in favor of wooden spoons, there is also an emotional and visceral reason to use them that comes from the comforting, familiar way wood feels in your hand—not cold and severe like stainless steel, or dull and characterless like plastic. So the wooden spoon will burst bubbles simply by being cold (or at least colder than 100C). By using this spoon you can prevent giving your family or dinner guests an unwanted germ. Once the spoon is a satisfactory shape, use card scrapers to remove tool marks and tearout. A wooden spoon in the pot or laid crosswise on the rim can serve to keep the lid vented.
The Dipping Spatula Spoon has a nice curve in the head of the spatula like our original Spatula Spoon, so it is easy to pick up sticky types of food and is also an excellent utensil for stir fry meals. These days, there are other options besides wood when looking for a spoon that won’t scratch your cookware. Caviar spoon – because of fact that silver changes the taste of caviar, these spoons are most often created from mother of pearl, gold, animal horn and wood. I can look at one of my wooden spoons and see a dent from harried Thanksgiving cooking, or a dark spot from summer blueberry pie. It is easy to leave too much wood here, making for a heavy, bulky spoon in use.
Back to cooking spoons now and any spoon with a patina like this is worth a closer look. By the way, the spoon pictured above is the one I mentioned in the first paragraph and it’s a far cry from what a beginner might accomplish. Mother Earth News first published the article How to Make a Wooden Spoon in the 1978 November/December print issue of their magazine but it is now available on their website. But now, I think I can provide a few reasons why a wooden spoon is an important kitchen utensil.
The term is commonly used in Australian and New Zealand sporting competitions, most notably in the major Australian rules, soccer and rugby football leagues (such as the AFL , the A-League , NRL , Super Rugby and ITM Cup ) and refer to the club positioned last on the league table at the end of the season. Which, of course, gives me a standard to aim for, whenever I make one of my own wooden spoons. It turns out that a wooden spoon is a great way to make those holes if your filling has a thicker consistency, like pudding.
All the while, wooden spoons have played an important role in kitchens around the world—and for good reason. This spoon is the only one that is here primarily because it represents something else. While my favorite wooden spoons are my older ones, there comes a time when they might be too old for cooking, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find something else to do with them. The wooden spoon can be somewhat more difficult to clean because of its fibrous material. Draw out your spoon design on your stock, ensuring that the grain runs straight through the entire spoon.
