If you enjoy music and have some mechanical ability, a fun project that you might enjoy would be making a cajon drum. As per your buzzing issue, it is known that many times tape is used to tape down the cajon strings to control the buzzing issue, and it is not unheard of that the makers of the cajon tape down the strings even when it’s brand new, but I have never known them to use thick tape, it was always 1 or 2 thin strips of tape per string, almost randomly placed, just to hold the strings against the wood.

As per teaching your students, the best way to teach them is to make sure they have fun with the cajon, ensemble class is always a good one too, where you get them all to play a simple groove in unison, and one by one each one gets a turn to solo and be creative (one at a time) for say 4 bars, and then once they get comfy with that, move it up to 8 bars etc!
