Shellac As A Sealer? It’s All Just Hype

The color I originally painted the floors was red (see pic below), but the next one was white with cream in the bedrooms. With oil-based, you typically have to wait until the next day to add another coat of polyurethane, but water-based polyurethane can be recoated in as soon as 2-3 hours. Please ensure your professional is well versed and comfortable with water based polyurethane. We do not have detailed analytical studies, but most customers who call to refinish their floors and previously had water based poly, call after 5-6 yrs. There’s pros and cons to each so I thought I’d share what I’ve learned when making my decision between these two types of polyurethane. It’s formulated to provide a rich amber toned color that we see in oil based finishes. Water-based polyurethane is popular among DIYers due to its relatively easy and forgiving application process.

A light sanding between coats is necessary only if Polyurethane for Floors has been allowed to dry for 12 hours or more. Epoxy with a polyurethane top coat will provide a thick coating that will create a very smooth floor. A few pro’s do stain maple with a technique called water popping…but the results can be less than predictable or good as they can turn out very blotchy and uneven. Never have issues with finish if the wood is raw though I have experienced the fogging” that someone mentioned when I put shellac over some older pieces of furniture that have a lacquer based finish. We would highly recommend an oil finish because it can be damp mopped as well as the flexibility in refreshing” the floors without major disruption to business. It enhances natural features of the wood, without covering the texture of the wood in a plastic looking” finish.

While it is impractical to discuss the pros and cons of each product, internal finishes can be classified into one of three broad categories Solvent Based, Water Based and Oil Based Coatings. Cheap brushes are fine for the first coat as it will mostly get sucked into the wood anyway and is harder on brushes (I leave live edges on many of my tables) but use a high quality brush on the rest. The conversion of the liquid oil to a solid is through a process called polymerization. Wait 21 days for your oil base polyurethane wood floor finish to acclimate to sunlight.

What it is: Wood floor wax is made from carnauba wax, which comes from the leaves of the Copernicia prunifera palm tree, native to northeastern Brazil. We’ll do our best to share our knowledge with and help you to compare an oil-based poly with a waterborne polyurethane that we use exclusively. If you need a surface that is more durable and resistant to liquids, you could consider a solvent-based polyurethane finish that has been moisture-cured. Cost- In most cases, oil based finishes are less expensive than water based finishes.

In years gone by, water based coatings have been regarded as inferior or lackluster alternatives to traditional solvent based products. Depending how long the polyurethane floors have cured and assuming the finish is oil based, you can apply Naptha, a distillate solvent to remove the wax residue. De lamination of the finish (strings from in-between floor boards and around thresholds) came during the summer, after the wood opens from winter contraction (in spite of house humidifier use and monitoring).

From furniture to floors, trust Minwax® products that beautify and protect wood. My dog accidentally stepped in polyurethane and then walked on our hardwood floor leaving several paw prints. Like epoxy, polyurethane is a thermosetting polymer as well and is considered a high performance coating. Our previous gloss polyurethane finish needed little maintenance compared to this.

I have read so many of these with people bickering back and forth of which is better Oil base or waterborne polyurethanes. I’ve come across all sorts of different opinions about the durability difference between oil-based and water-based polyurethane. The good news is that if you’ve got a hardwood floor, and you’ve been a good hardwood floor owner and done due diligence throughout the year in maintaining it, then there won’t be too much for you to do on that front ( click here for the best way to clean hardwood floors on a regular basis). I have a project at home that I wanted to put some poly on over a shellac and oil base finished and was putting off until I read these tests. I used a Valspar oil-based gloss enamel for floors and the first coat went on very smooth.

This is the fourth time that we’ve had hardwood floors refinished in our house – it would have been so much easier and less expensive to have done all of the hardwoods at once but unfortunately I didn’t have that foresight before we moved in. The first hardwoods that we refinished were in our kitchen where we used oil based polyurethane, but for all of our refinishing jobs since then we’ve gone with water based.
