Hardwood Flooring Stain Color Trends

I have many customer who opt for a 50/50 blend of jacobean and ebony for a deep and rich tone. Just one application of the steel wool stain significantly darkened the other stains. It finishes to a beautiful sheen, with limited effort… that being said I do have one customer that inserts ebony into a vacuum chamber to stabilize it in all his knife making adventures.

You can pay significantly more for wood that is guaranteed to be pure black throughout. Dark floors can be a bit more challenging to clean and maintain as they tend to show dirt and scratches a bit more. In my experience, mahogany seems to absorb dark walnut stain more than jacobean and dark walnut, so that that may work better (vs. Every species in the ebony family is highly durable and rot resistant, but most suffer from significant shrinkage and seasonal movement.

I’m firm on grey floors in my kitchen and getting ready to buy stain to experiment to find the right combination for my desired grey floor look. It’s hard for me to say one way or another without seeing your apartment and the color of your furniture, walls etc. If you want a phone made out of wood like the beautiful Moto X in Walnut shown above, you can now get one. By converting tile (or even vinyl) in entryways to hardwood, it helps make the space look larger, provided that it is the same color as the rest of the hardwood flooring.

In the picture above, you can see the micro-beveled edges a bit (it is much more apparent in person vs the photo) vs. the photo above which is smooth as it is site finished.. In many prefinished woods, you can see the lighter color oak in the grooves (but of course you won’t see that in the professional photos that have been touched up). I don’t seem to find any tests to lighten up the ebony taking away a bit of the red tinge of the red oak (my intent). The wood of such a tree, especially the hard black heartwood of D. ebenum or certain other species, used in cabinetwork and inlaying and for piano keys. Not sure why Antique Brown isn’t as popular but we do quite a few Jacobean floors. Mix a saturated solution from dry crystals in hot water and apply to the entire surface, not just the stain. I would not recommend putting a 2nd coat of stain on. If you do that, the poly won’t adhere properly and you can get peeling.
