Building And Installing Deck Stairs

Make sure all of the step risers are the same height, and all the step treads the same width to avoid a tripping hazard. In order to calculate your own floor load width you will need an idea of the size of deck that you want to build. Make sure the top level of a deck attached to your house wall is at least 150mm below the damp proof course (DPC). It measured approximately 4 x 4′, and the joists and band board were installed just like the rest of the deck. A well build set of stairs, however, will not only provide easy access to your yard, but they can also add dimension and style to a home’s exterior.

Remarkably, the project has an impressive resale value, and a homeowner can reasonably expect to recoup around 80% of the total construction costs for such a deck at the time of sale. Tread length 900 mm Minimum concrete slab 1200 x 300 x 100 mm Distance between centres of brackets and stringers 945 mm. Once one stringer had been cut (and tested in place to make sure it fit) I used it as a guide to mark and cut two more 2 x 12 boards, since I’d need 3 total stringers for my 48″ wide steps.

The quality and strength of the decks you build will depend on the size of your card collection: the more vast your collection is, the better your decks can be. But do not let this fact discourage you if your collection is limited. Jim is considered an expert in safe, outdoor wood deck construction and he provides economical product solutions to satisfy structural code requirements.

Instead, create a return by drawing a straight line along the mark you made from the corner of the board (Image 3). For the last stair, create another return (Image 4). This section will be the part of the stringer that sits on the ground. Love this article I will be using it in a few weeks for renovating my deck which is nearly identical in size and shape. Decide where the stringers will be attached to the deck either to the rim joist or below using the deck its self as the 1st step.

All of which ensures you can build your deck steps to a similar high standard of work and care, while keeping your eye on important features like safety and beauty. When it comes to deck building a deck contractor is often called upon to build a staircase so the homeowners can gain access to their backyard. Clamp the baserail in place, and fix it to the deck posts with countersunk screws. Design scale is important for any project, but the scale of a front-entry deck in relation to the rest of the house and yard merits extra attention. I’ll take a stab, but ultimately, you should consider paying a contractor to at least design the deck.

Attach them to railings using 3” deck screws, making sure they are plumb and that the gap between them is no larger than 6”. For a more comfortable handrail, attach a 1×2 cap along the entire top of the railings. You then determine how deep you want each step to be (for example, 12 inches) and multiply that figure by the number of steps to get the total run of your stairs.

We had just enough bearing surface to use structural fasteners both into the stringer from the back side of the rim joist as well as additional fasteners through the outside of the stringers into the deck structure. The advantage of this method is that it is easier to attach the stringers to the deck, since they will be resting against a rim joist or an end joist.

I always lay a piece of finish decking on top of the joists to measure from; otherwise – if I measure off the deck frame – I might forget to add in the width of the decking. That is, if you want a finished landing surface that is 3 feet square, and the bases of the stringers take up 1 foot, you should build a landing that is 3 feet by 4 feet. Hopefully, this gives you a good idea as to what is involved and now you know how to build steps. Build it so that the finished surface rests at the height of one of the planned treads. Deck screws to fasten the skirts and treads to the stringers and the skirts to the to build deck steps

Deck boards are pressure-treated with a long-lasting preservative treatment but the colour will fade after a few months. The load that you put onto your deck can at times be very large indeed, so correct calculations of the stiffness and strength of the internal timbers of your deck are essential. The two outside stringers were slightly longer so that the cross member was situated in-between them.

Usually, one of two design options is used: deck stairs on the stair stringers or on the bridge board. Wether for a front porch, deck, or back porch, the process for wooden steps is basically the same. Use some kind of asphalt membrane – like tar paper – to set the stringers on when setting the foot of the stairs on concrete. If you’d prefer a solid stairway to an open stair, you can fill in the gaps with joist off-cuts or deck boards.

Adding a deck to your home is an attractive way to utilise space around your home. The Unique Situation with this Deck: The exterior of the house is a combination of brick and block. So rather than calculate a set of stairs and try to sort out the landing afterward, I lay out the landing first and cut the stairs to fit. There was no flashing or preservative between the deck planks and the joists and beams.

Snap a chalk line and tack straight boards to the deck to guide your circular saw, and trim all the boards at one time. Now, from a point 75 1⁄4″ out from the deck along that horizontal board, measure down to the ground. A great way to make any deck unique is to incorporate a natural feature, such as a boulder or tree. Make a copy of your house plan and draw the deck on to it to get the scale right.

For the parts that show—the skirts, treads and risers (lead photo) —choose material that matches the deck. Then position a length of handrail on the outside face of the posts, parallel with the angle of the steps. What is the proper method to attach a ledger board (for a deck) to a house that has vinyl siding already installed. If you can finish off your deck by filling it up with such minions (again, while being quite ruthless, and always analysing whether each minion belongs in this specific deck), then that is great, and the first version of your new deck is complete. The shop or company will make the stringers by cutting out notches for each step in pieces of 2-by-14-inch framing lumber.

Time to complete this project depends on the size of the deck and the level of help available, the times listed here are for two people on a 10’x 30′ deck with the house defining two sides of the deck. For the stringers: 300 x 50 mm DAR/dressed-all-round selected native hardwoods, selected plantation pine, selected to provide relatively straight grained, clear pieces. Consult your TABMA timber supplier about suitable available, durable timber for weather-exposed steps.

Depending on how the work progresses, I may form and pour the landing before laying out and cutting the stringers (Figure 1). Other times, I make a mark on a grade stake indicating the top of the landing, measure to the mark, and cut the stairs. Editors Note: We are walking through this deck build chronologically, but stair stringer trim is best left after the treads, risers and stair guards have been installed. Place posts at base of stringers and mark the portion of the tread to be removed.

Two 10 mm galvanized bolts, nuts, washers for each timber cleat used, (or 4 bolts per tread) length of bolt to suit thickness of cleats plus stringers you have selected. The middle set ran all the way into the ground where they were secured much like the deck posts: a 30″ deep hole, concrete footer, and backfilled with dirt. Video Summary: In the video, Steve shares how driving temporary anchors makes it easier to install the ledger board.

There are at least two manufacturers making brackets designed to screw to stringers that are cut only at the top and bottom. Some class-specific cards are simply not good enough to warrant being played in any deck whatsoever. Because the landing platform may not be perfectly level or smooth, the final stringer bottom cut may not be exactly along the yellow line shown in our photo at above left. Bricks or solid concrete blocks can be placed under the bottom of the stringers to keep them off the ground and provide a level foundation.

Rise is the vertical distance from the surface an upper deck to the surface of a lower deck or from the surface of a deck to the ground. If the bracket elevates the stringer off the landing then you’ll need to trim the stringer bottom – even if it’s just 1/4 inch. These questions are quite specific… I would assume that this deck was designed using prescriptive design procedures so elements were not engineered. In that case, add a hangerboard, which is a carpentry term for an extra board to provide a solid nailing surface for stringers.
