Adding glass doors to existing shelves is a great way to upgrade the look of the room. So if you’re using 3/4″ thick plywood (recommended for cabinet doors), you would use 1″ x 3/4″ wood strips for the edge. Normally I would make the doors slightly larger than needed and then plane them down when fitting them onto the cabinet face frames. With every board having a thin groove now you can adjust the fence to get the final size of the groove that will accept the plywood panels. When you’re done, apply edgebanding to the front of the shelf, insert shelf pins in the appropriate locations and install your shelf. Gain an understanding of joinery terminology and start to create a frame-and-panel door.
They are among the most expensive items in any kitchen renovation project, so being able to build your own will be a real plus, but be sure it’s cost effective from a business point of view. The best choices for strength are plywood and higher-quality particle board; they also have the benefit of being less susceptible to warping from moisture. To hold the panel upright, clamp a runner block to the panel so that the block will be guided by the top edge of the rip fence, as shown. If the plywood panel is too tight in the groove it will push the walls of the groove out causing the joinery to not fit properly.
As previously mentioned, the North American traditional style of kitchen cabinet is basically a box with a wooden face frame attached to the front edge. At the time, work surfaces were typically made of linoleum or stainless steel Improvements in technology eventually made industrial-scale cabinet production possible. Phase 2” was to make replacement cabinet doors for her kitchen and laundry area.
The existing doors and drawers are 3/4″ thick, so adding trim to the fronts would make even thicker…so thick, in fact, that the door fronts would extend past the edge of the countertop. The other added advantage of the European hinge is that they are hidden when the door(s) are closed so you don’t have to worry about carrying different styles of hinges.
Unlike the standard base, it’s easy to add a toe kick on the side of a cabinet such as the exposed end of a cabinet run. Fasten two self-closing cabinet-door hinges to each door, then lay the cabinet on its back and set the doors on the face frame. I always make the door slightly smaller than actual dimension that the grooved frame will accommodate, allowing it to simply float in the groove without being physically attached to the frame. Your cabinet door style can be one of the most important factors in your kitchen’s new design.
