Wood burning is one of the most popular forms of wood craft, because of the fun you can have burning drawings and designs into a wooden plank while creating your own artistic masterpieces. I’ve already vowed to go further if and when we move house, and am planning to install a stove with a back boiler. Most stoves can’t be used to burn wood in smoke-controlled areas – but there are a growing number considered to be so super-clean-burning they are given an exemption from the controls. Just remember that your fire must also meet any municipal, local fire department or Ministry of Forest burning rules (you may require a permit). Pieces are commonly 12 to 18 inches long, so a face cord may contain 32 to 48 cubic feet of wood and air.
There are a lot of wood burning stoves that are on the market today and each of them have some particular strengths and weaknesses. The best wood stove will allow you to change the rate of air that flows over your embers, but that feature isn’t necessary for every home. Wood pellets are made from waste wood that has been formed under high pressure into small cylindrical pellets.
Most stoves can be installed virtually anywhere in the home, have the fire contained, and will work even when the power goes out in the home. I couldn’t live without CH any more (having done so for several years) but the reason many people here are turning to wood & coal burners is the cost of gas. Upon entry into the BWCA our first meal was actually right on the fire grate – but thereafter we used our BioLite stove for every meal.
This is the reason why the firewood catches fire more easily when the door to the wood stove is left ajar. Freshly-cut wood can be up to 45% water, while well-seasoned firewood generally has a 20-25% moisture content. Living in semi-rural Derbyshire, at the bottom of a small valley, I find that even in a large proper wood store, the wood will be too wet in a normal British winter. Size is the most important thing to consider when purchasing a wood burning appliance.
Dry wood will burn hot – heating up the flue, creating a fast draw, and shooting the smaller amount of vapours out of the chimney before they get a chance to condense. The climate where you live, how much heat your house loses, how many rooms your house is divided into, and what type of wood you are burning all play a role in determining how big of an area the insert can effectively heat.
You can’t burn anything but pellets in a pellet stove and can’t burn coal in a wood stove. The purchase, installation, and maintenance costs of a stove/pipe/flue combination amortized over its lifetime effect the true total cost of wood heat. Burning garbage produces noxious fumes, could damage your stove, and violates the City of Prince George’s Clean Air Bylaw.
